The Certificate-prepared Nurse Educator (NE) is prepared to lead in nursing education and staff development programs with an emphasis on curriculum development and program evaluation. The Certificate-prepared Nurse Practitioner is ready to assume responsibility and accountability for the health promotion, assessment, diagnosis, and management of patient problems.

These include the prescription of pharmacologic agents within a specialty area of clinical practice, such as:

How Are Classes Conducted?

UMKC’s graduate programs are designed to give professionals flexibility. Students use the web-based software Canvas for their online courses, which allows them to engage in interactive learning with faculty and classmates. Students can log onto Canvas to find homework, assignments, a class list, a syllabus, and more anytime. Depending on the professor and class, courses are conducted in synchronous and asynchronous modes.

We designed the graduate programs to give professionals flexibility.

How Do I Apply? 

 

Are you convinced that the UMKC MSN program is right for you? Here is what you need to know to apply and enroll:

Admission Requirements   

  • MSN or DNP from a college or university nationally recognized by a nursing accrediting agency (CCNE or AACN)
  • A cumulative GPA of a 3.2 on a 4.0 scale from your MSN/DNP
    *Students may be admitted on probation with a GPA of 3.0-3.19
  • Personal Interviews are required
  • Current unencumbered licensure in the state in which the student completes clinical requirements.

The following are the common prerequisites for graduate-level coursework to be completed before or as part of the certificate program of study. These courses may be from your MSN graduate program or completed at UMKC with your certificate hours:

  • Advanced Pathophysiology Across the Lifespan
  • Advanced Health Assessment Skills
  • Diagnostic Reasoning for the APRN
  • Advanced Pharmacology/Applied Pharmacology Across the Lifespan
    • Note: this course is taken as part of the program of study for: Primary Care Pediatric, Adult Gerontology, Family, and Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner Post-MSN Certificate students.
  • Health Promotion

Application Deadlines

Applications are processed in the order they are received. Completing your application earlier increases the likelihood of early acceptance. 

 

  • October 16, 2026 (for early decision/acceptance) to start coursework in January or June 2027
  • March 5, 2027 (for regular acceptance) to start coursework in June 2027
  • March 5, 2027 (Fall 2027 start for Nurse Educator & Post-MSN Certificates ONLY)
 
All required materials are due by 5 pm CST on the due date.
